MARK MORRIS TO SPEAK AT ANNUAL NEUROSCIENCE CONFERENCE IN WASHINGTON, D.C.
As part of Neuroscience2008, the 38th annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience taking place November 15 - 19 in Washington, DC, Mark Morris will participate in an open discussion, Dance: Movement in Time and Space. Scheduled to open the conference on November 15, the event will include a panel discussion with Morris, Society for Neuroscience President, Eve Marder, and neuroscientist, Bevil Conway, followed by questions from the audience.
Discussion topics include the relationship between internally and externally generated rhythms, the importance of proprioception for dance, and how dancers learn movement sequences and achieve movement precision in time and space.
The open discussion on November 15 is free and open to the public.
Mark Morris will also host 500 neuroscientists while they watch a Dance for Parkinson’s class (transmitted via closed-circuit). This class is based on MMDG's work with the Brooklyn Parkinson Group. Dance Group members David Leventhal and John Heginbotham will lead the class including people with Parkinson’s from the DC-area as well as some neuroscientists afflicted by PD. At the end of the class, the dancers and some of the participants will join Mark on stage for a Q/A. This is NOT open to the public and can only be attended if space is reserved at time of Neuroscience2008 registration.
